The Ragdoll

By Jonathan Koskas

Introduction

Apparently, I am among the biggest domestic cats, like the Maine Coon my fellow countryman, or its distant cousin, the Norwegian Forest Cat. Still, I am not as long as the former, and my fur is not as woolly as the second's. My body is rectangular, my medium lengthed legs are strong and my feet are round. As a male, I weigh between 6 and 9 kg, as a female, from 4 to 6, sometimes more. I even show, most of all in winter, a small fat pad on my lower abdomen.

My head is an even wedge with rounded contours, my ears are medium-sized and tilt forward ; I have large oval intense blue eyes, my nose has a gentle curve and my muzzle is round and full, which, according to my breeders and judges, gives me a sweet and alert expression, giving my owner the impression that I am questioning him with a look.My head is an even wedge with rounded contours, my ears are medium-sized and tilt forward; I have large oval intense blue eyes, my nose has a gentle curve and my muzzle is round and full, which, according to my breeders and judges, gives me a sweet and alert expression, giving my owner the impression that I am questioning him with a look.

I am classified among the semi-long haired cat breeds, and I follow the seasonal changes: longer and thicker during the winter season, shorter during summertime, my fur is silky and plush, along my body. I display a wide bib and pants on my back legs. My tail is long and bushy, and I proudly carry it higher than my hips.

Finally, like the Birman, the Siamese, the Balinese and some others, my coat is called colourpoint, since I am darker on head, tail and feet than on the rest of the body. My breeders find it funny as I am born all white, and gently get darker and darker as days go by. The colours I can display are seal, blue, chocolate, lilac, red, cream... with or without stripes (to know more about my colours, have a look at the genetics pages).

The Colourpoint

But I show something more than my famous colourpoint counterparts, since I can show three different patterns, as you can see on the numerous drawings and pictures that illustrate my website.

All in all, according to my numerous fans, my size, my fur, my gracious looks and my blue eyes give me a natural elegance, without sophistication, and the look of a sweet giant.

Behaviour

Many things have been written, and still are, about my behaviour: my creator, Ann Baker, herself behaving like « bewitched Samantha », same old days !, told many lies and rumours, in order to strike the public, of course, and one has to admit that some still stick to my reputation !

Some say I am always floppy, some even arguing that I have a lower muscular tone than the other breeds, which is an echo of the so-called genetic changes our ancestor, Josephine, is said to have suffered. Let's be serious : everyone knows that the genetic manipulations were not that widespread almost half a century ago !

More reasonably, mid-long haired breeds are usually more quiet that the short-haired breeds and my breeders have indeed worked on my sweet nature and inner confidence, settling, generation after generation, my reputation of « nicest of all cats ».

The Mitted

However, the stupid stories telling that I would not be sensible to pain are not serious, and even dangerous for my fellow Ragdolls : like all other cats, or more, like any being gifted with a nervous system, I suffer when one walks on my tail ! and I « say » it !

Whatever : I am playful, even if my large size gives me a lumbering, I am loving and I like to follow my owners everywhere, talking to them with my sweet voice. I am the family and kids ideal companion, I like other cats and dogs, if we have been introduced correctly. I feel at ease in an apartment for, even though I am sometimes naughty, I need to run around moderately.

Even if, like other cats, we love to discover a garden and its pleasures, it is highly recommended not to let us go outside, because we are not aware of dangers and troubles and diseases are numerous.

Care

Thanks to my coat's texture, my grooming is easy : I like to be combed once a week, sometimes more during the shedding period, which helps me not swallow too much hair while washing myself. The best thing is to get me used to it while I am still a kitten, as you would also do by bathing me at a young age, if you plan to do that from time to time.
